There is a definite connection between TMJ & Bruxism - Grinding or clenching your teeth. TMJ - commonly referring to Temporomandibular joint disorder - an acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull - This can result in significant pain and impairment. When you combine Bruxism and TMJ you may notice headaches, earaches, facial pain, chipped teeth and chewed tissue on the inside of the mouth.
Many people who suffer from Bruxism - called "Bruxers" - will go for years without knowing they are grinding or clenching their teeth. Some will go they whole lives and never know, because it is not severe enough to cause problems. It is typically only when it is severe enough to be causing physical problems that it is discovered.
What are some of the most common signs that you may have Bruxism?
- are you teeth showing signs of wear?
- does your jaw, neck, or ears hurt in the morning?
- do you wake up with a headache?
- have you teeth become more sensitive?
- has your sleep partner mentioned the sounds?
Experts do not know the exact cause of Bruxism - they have a few possible reasons. It could be that there are different causes for different people. One idea would be to change things one at a time and see if they make any difference for you.
What are some possible causes of Bruxism?
- uneven alignment of the jaws
- stress & anxiety
- alcohol & caffeine
- sleeping on your back
- some medications
- not getting enough sleep
Of course, there are many more possibilities. That is why finding a way to stop teeth grinding can be so hard - and when it combines with TMJ is can be painful and something you want to end quickly.
