Catch Dog Joint and Muscle Problems Before They Get Out of Control


We love our dogs and try to take care of them as best as possible. But problems occur despite our best intentions and precautions. Common ailments include arthritis, muscle strains and pulls and hip dysplasia. However, your beloved pooch need not be in constant pain and discomfort. The first step is to identify whether there is a joint or muscle problem. Even if in doubt, a visit to the vet is never unwarranted, especially if you are able to catch a problem before it gets too serious.

Different factors can affect the health of your dog's joints. Infection, degenerative disease and physical trauma are all known factors that cause joint problems. Joints work improperly due to bone, muscle, ligament, tendon or nerve damage. Physical signs of joint problems include obvious pain, swelling, rigidity and an increase of body temperature. However, these symptoms are not necessarily due to joint problems. Understanding common joint and muscle problems that dogs have will help you to see the warning signs and help you to understand when your pet starts acting out of the ordinary.

Hip dysplasia: The basic definition of hip dysplasia is any abnormal formation of the hip joint. This abnormal formation causes looseness to the joint, which results in physical symptoms. Some breeds are more prone to dysplasia than others, but it is beneficial for all dog owners to know what to look for. After regular exercise the puppy may refuse to walk any farther and sit back on its legs. Another warning sign in puppies is that their back legs may look a bit underdeveloped.

Even if your dog appears normal, it does not mean that he or she has escaped hip dysplasia. Some dogs simply accept the pain and you won't notice any sort of complaining until the hip has degenerated into joint disease. The only way to know for sure your dog doesn't have hip dysplasia is through a pelvic x-ray.

When it is Time to go to the Vet:
Any sort of obvious pain is cause to make an appointment with your veterinarian. Even if you're fairly confident that it is simply arthritis, you will not know for sure until your dog is examined.

What to Expect at the Veterinarian:
At the visit, the vet will want to do an overall physical, especially if your dog is a new patient or it has been awhile since the last visit. The physical will include a dental check, physical palpitation for any bumps or lumps and confirmation of spaying or neutering. A dental check-up is more important than some owners realize. Bacteria can lead to infection, which then can spread throughout the entire body if left untreated. When the visit is for possible joint or muscle problems, the vet will most likely want an x-ray to rule-out hip dysplasia and verify any other theories.

Hopefully, all checks out well with your pet and there are no problem other than the need for a little extra rest! We all love our pets and sometimes all does not turn out well after a vet visit. But, there are many ways to treat joint and muscle problems while alleviating discomfort. Arthritis - Coping With This Crippling Disease


Many people would associate arthritis with the onset of old age. Although old people may suffer from arthritis, it isn't only the elderly who are affected by arthritis. Many younger people, including some in their teens suffer from some kind of arthritis. Dictionaries define arthritis as being an inflammation of the joints due to infectious, metabolic, or constitutional causes. Obviously that can include a large number of different causes of this illness.

Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints and the cartilage of the joints; furthermore it is an ongoing, degenerative disease. This is probably one of the most difficult aspects of the disease to cope with: although today may be painful, the future will possibly only be worse.

There are more than one hundred different types of arthritis. Two of the most common types are osteoarthritis, caused by the wear and tear exerted on the joints through a lifetime and rheumatoid arthritis, caused by an autoimmune response in the body. Not only is the arthritis a painful and crippling disease in the first place; but exercise, something that is necessary for maintaining a healthy weight as well cardiovascular health, can become all but impossible. Although seeking a cure to an arthritic condition may be laudable, a far more effective strategy may be to aim at reducing the pain, healing what can be healed and planning to maintain independent living as long as possible. A cure would be wonderful, but learning to cope with arthritis in the meantime is a good idea.

Oxidative Stress: Are Our Cells Surviving in a Hostile World?

Through biochemical research we're learning that we are not defenseless against this attack on our body by free radicals. Each of us must ask, "Am I getting enough antioxidants from my diet to protect myself from this onslaught of free radicals or do I need to be taking nutritional supplements?" This is the question that I've had to ask myself as I have spent countless hours researching medical literature.

But more often than not, the human body does not behave in linear fashion and unintended consequences from what we assume to be healthy actions can occur. Personally, I would recommend staying away from high doses of antioxidants.

The antioxidants found in vegetables and fruit exist in naturally low concentrations alongside other nutrients that can also promote good health. Even those who do their best to follow a healthy diet could likely benefit from taking an indirect antioxidant as insurance against nutritional gaps in their diet. Others may need additional targeted supplementation based on their unique health circumstances, but the focus for most of us should be on dietary sources of antioxidants along with an all-natural dietary supplement made from organic herbs until we have clarity regarding safety.

Our bodies need an adequate supply of antioxidants to limit the buildup of compounds called reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are normally produced as a byproduct of cellular energy production.

ROS also accumulates when we are exposed to toxins such as tobacco smoke and radiation. When an excess amount of ROS exists, there is said to be a state of oxidative stress, a condition linked to the development of numerous health problems. It only makes sense then that adding safe antioxidants to our systems should help lessen the chance for oxidative stress to occur and, by extension, help prevent illness.

The types of dog arthritis

Non Surgical Spinal Decompression - A Promising Cure for Chronic Low Back Pain


Millions of people, young and old suffer from debilitating low back pain. It is said to be the most popular reason for doctor visits, and a leading cause of lost work days.

Low back pain can be caused by several conditions. One of the most common is degenerative disc disease (DDD), also referred to as degenerative joint disease. This refers to the degradation of the disc and surrounding tissue. It is believed that DDD is triggered by one or more traumatic events, such as a car accident or sports injury. However, many DDD sufferers interestingly deny having been involved in such trauma. In DDD, the collagen fibers of the disc deteriorate, allowing the jelly-like center (called the nucleus pulposus) to gravitate to the edge, thus forming a bulge. This is where the laymen's term "disc bulge" comes from. The nucleus, when exposed can trigger an auto-immune reaction, where the body initiates an inflammatory response. The chemicals of inflammation irritate surrounding nerves, causing much of the pain. If the bulge presses on a spinal nerve root, it can cause pain to travel down the leg.

Statistically, back surgery is known to have limited success in totally eliminating disc related back pain. Many orthopedic surgeons tend to advise the patient to seek non-invasive procedures first, unless there is a clear-cut need for surgical intervention. Surgery requires destruction or alteration of critical muscle groups that are involved in spinal movement. This often leads to abnormal kinematics (joint movement) and reduces protective reflex pathways, which may lead to advanced degenerative changes.

Now there is a new procedure called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD). NSSD basically distracts, or pulls apart and releases spinal vertebra in a cyclical fashion, much like an accordion. This creates a negative pressure inside the disc, which helps to retract the disc bulge. The negative pressure also draws in surrounding fluids and increases blood flow to the weakened disc, in effect rehydrating it. The increased blood flow brings in collagen-synthesizing cells called fibroblasts, which begin to lay down layers of collagen, strengthening the disc.

NSSD utilizes a special table with a frictionless gliding section and computer chip controlled traction head. The patient is secured to the table either face up or face down. A harness is attached to the pelvis that is connected to the traction mechanism. The doctor inputs the settings (maximum pull and minimum pull (lbs.), hold and rest durations, pull patterns (static or intermittent), and treatment time. Usually, it takes 30-40 minutes per session and between 20-30 sessions for most cases. The results tend to be long lasting, and in some cases, permanent.

In extreme cases, there is permanent disfigurement too. Swelling in these areas is marked leading to a gradual limp in the gait and virtual inability to climb stairs. Pain gradually increases during the daytime and bedtime becomes unbearable or, at the very least, very uncomfortable. With the complete wearing off taking place in the cartilages, the bone joints rub against each other increasing the pain many fold. Even the slightest touching of one bonehead with the other in the missing cartilage area causes enormous pain.

Since the disease is degenerative in nature, osteoarthritis does not have a permanent cure. There may be medication for pain relief but that is purely temporary in nature. Steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs may be used to prevent worsening of the pain. Surgical treatments such as complete replacement and resurfacing procedures have been able to address the issue with some success but again, the costs involved in these procedures are astronomical. There are also continuous post-surgical medications that may become necessary depending upon the progress made.
