New Chapter - Osteo Care For the Elderly

Many of the aches and pains involved with the aging process are due to osteoarthritis or degenerative diseases of the bone. As we age our bones, joints, and the cartilage which holds them together begin to go through changes.

New Chapter know that degenerative arthritis also known as degenerative joint disease is part of a group of related diseases and/or mechanical abnormalities which relate to the degradation of our joints. This is why we feel stiffness, creaking, tenderness, joint pain, and sometimes locking of our joints. Many times this is the result of locally inflamed joints and connective cartilage, known as osteoarthritis (OA).

Many ways to blame the pain

Among the many reasons we are bothered by osteoarthritis are:

• Heredity
• Metabolic causes
• Mechanical causes
• Developmental causes
• Lack of calcium

A loss of cartilage is the result in many instances, creating pain on movement. When this tissue is damaged, it tries to re-grow itself and this often accelerates the damage. Cartilage is made up of a strong protein matrix which lubricates while it cushions our joints. As this breaks down, our joints no longer "glide" in place as when we were younger, and each movement becomes painful.

New Chapter Vitamins, minerals, and supplements have much to offer those who suffer from osteoarthritis through their calcium supplements, which are derived from whole food sources. And when calcium is paired with natural co-factors like magnesium along with other trace minerals, works most effectively to strengthen bones and joints suffering from diseases like osteoarthritis.

New Chapter calcium complex proudly delivers key essential nutrients, derived from whole food (the safest, most active form). Our bodies need this form of nutrient complex, knowing it works much more efficiently than the limestone sources to be found in many other calcium supplements.

Other essential ingredients

Among other essential ingredients found in New Chapter Vitamins, supplements, and minerals are calcium and magnesium supplements, along with other bone enriching nutrients to complete the food complex. Vitamin K has been found to be an essential co-factor useful in calcium absorption as well as calcium retention in our bodies. When human cell proteins don't get enough vitamin K, they do not tend to hold on to the calcium in the body and the results are loss of vital nutrients.

What is the Difference Between a Medial and Lateral Unloader Knee Brace?

Degenerative Joint Disease affects millions of Americans and with an aging baby boomer population will most certainly become more of an issue as we try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and battle against the affects of our youth. The knee joint is one of the most effected areas in the body regarding the "wear and tear" effects of osteoarthritis. More patients and doctors are looking for alternatives to medication and surgery to improve patient mobility, reduce pain and swelling, and prevent the inevitable and dreaded "knee replacement".

"Unloader" knee braces, or "arthritis" knee braces, are designed to literally bend the knee into a position that reduces the stress and weight on the affected joint, thereby reducing pain and swelling. There are two compartments in the knee, referred to as medial or inner and lateral or outer compartments. The vast majority of patients suffer from medial compartment osteoarthritis (unicarpartmental oseoarthritis). When this occurs, the joint cartilage, synovial fluid are reduced or absent and the result is a "collapse" of the medial compartment.

The knee joint becomes misaligned and what was normally a joint that bears equal pressure to support the body, turns into a painful angular joint, with excessive wear and pressure on the inner compartment, with pain, swelling and in advanced stages, limitation of movement. The angular change caused by this medial compartment arthritis is referred to as a varus deformity. This term refers to an inward angulation of the lower leg in relation to the thigh. If you have ever seen a newborn and looked at their legs, you will understand what a varus or bow leg is. This is a varus deformity.

Likewise, the angular change caused by a lateral compartment arthritis is referred to as a valgus deformity. This term refers to an outwards deviation of the lower leg in relation to the thigh. Many people are familiar with the term "knock knee". In the old days, you would see movies, where the teenage girl sits with her knees and thighs together, and her feet spread out. This is a valgus deformity.

An "unloader" knee brace corrects the varus or valgus relationship of the leg to the thigh, making the entire leg straighter and aligning the joint back to its level position. By bending the knee joint back into a more aligned position, the brace opens up a gap or space between the leg and thigh bone, so the two bones do not rub up against each other. This reduces the pain or swelling that occurs when two rough arthritis bones come in contact with each other.

When purchasing an "unloader" knee brace, it is important to know if you have a medial or lateral osteoarthritis. This can be confirmed with x-rays, noting the collapse of the knee joint, and the angular changes that are occurring. It is also important to consult with your treating doctor prior to purchasing such a device. Wearing a lateral unloader knee brace with a medial compartment arthritis may result in increased pain, swelling and accelerated joint damage. There are many choices to be made when deciding which arthritis or "unloader" knee brace to purchase. Please check with your doctor and do your research before you choose.

Get Rid Of Arthritis Pain Forever

I know the secret to getting rid of arthritis pain forever and it is not taking drugs. A few years ago I accidentally discovered how to rid one's self of arthritis pain, naturally. Osteoarthritis affects joints in a different way depending on their location in the body, causing various symptoms. Arthritis pain can be experienced whenever a stiff or swollen joint is used. The first step when looking for solutions to an arthritis pain problem is to understand how arthritis works.

Collagen is the essential protein in cartilage; it forms a mesh to give support and flexibility to the joint. The combination of the collagen meshwork and high water content tightly bound by proteoglycans, creates a resilient, slippery pad in the joint, which resists the compression between bones during muscle movement. Cartilage contains a high percentage of water, but it decreases with age.

Most experts now believe that osteoarthritis results from a genetic susceptibility that causes a biologic response to injuries to the joint, which leads to progressive deterioration of cartilage. Injuries sometimes can be the start in the arthritic disease process; osteoarthritis can develop years later even after a single traumatic injury to a joint or near a joint. The cause of arthritis (osteoarthritis) and the factors leading to the deterioration of cartilage in osteoarthritis is still not understood.

Making a ginger tea, by adding a thin slice or two of fresh gingerroot to hot water, is helpful to many people I know. A study in Great Britain touted the beneficial effects of cod liver oil on osteoarthritis; relieving pain and stiffness, and reversing the destruction of joint cartilage within 24 hours. For snacks, choose raw nuts without salt instead of lifeless roasted nuts.

Natural treatment for arthritis is usually a better choice because it's non-invasive to the body. One natural treatment method involves avoiding all inflammatory foods. Dried Montmorency tart cherries seem to be helpful for arthritis pain also.

If you really want to get rid of your arthritis pain forever it may take a radical change in your diet and an ongoing commitment. Keep in mind, if you take a joint supplement it should help do three things -- build cartilage, relieve everyday joint pain, and enhance your flexibility and movement.

Make smoothies with fruit only using a base of two bananas, adding a cup of frozen or fresh blueberries and mango chunks or substitute any other fruit and add an energy boost of two tablespoons of coconut oil; add one or two leaves of kale for another highly nutritional boost -- no one will ever know. I eat a diet of living foods (fruits, raw veggies, raw nuts and raw seeds) to relieve my arthritis pain and this should be tried for at least 30 days, thus eliminating any foods that might be culprits.

There are a number of exercises which can benefit arthritis sufferers regardless of how much restriction of movement there is. Exercise your affected joints every day, to keep them flexible. If you have pain and swelling in your fingers, try squeezing Thera-putty made for this purpose or exercising with two Chinese chime balls. Exercise in a heated pool; it will help reduce the pressure on your joints and the heat will help you loosen those joints.

Sign up for water aerobics classes at your local community center. Even the lightest exercise can go a long way to maintaining your joint mobility and overall health. Important exercises for arthritis are range-of-motion exercises, isometrics, and some weight bearing exercises.

Once you become more informed about arthritis you'll be able to plan an arthritis treatment program, natural or conventional or a combination of both. At the very least, understand what the side effects and adverse reactions are for any drug you take. Only you know which treatment option is best for you.

Once you understand the facts about arthritis, possible causes and treatment approaches you can take, you'll be on your way to recovery and pain will disappear. Arthritis pain relief is the ultimate goal - understanding arthritis is a good way to get there. Changing your diet to predominately fruits and raw veggies, like I did, can turn your arthritis pain around almost overnight.

Gout Pain Relief - 4 Ways to Lower Uric Acid

Are you tired of waking up to terrible gout pain? If you are like most gout patients, the majority of your pain is caused by too much uric acid in your system. This acid crystallizes causing painful inflammation of your joints, the most famous being the big toe.

Here are 4 ways you can lower your levels and in the process reduce the likelihood of future attacks and also help your current pain.

1. Potassium

Eating foods rich in potassium such as raisins and bananas are an excellent way to help reduce levels of this acid. Potassium is able to lower uric acid by turning it into a liquid so that your kidneys are able to more efficiently excrete it thereby reducing your numbers. This will help prevent or lessen future attacks. By turning the crystals into a liquid form, this also helps break down the crystals which are causing the damage and inflammation to your joint area. This swelling and damage is what is the chief cause of your pain.

2. Avoid high purine foods

Uric acid is formed when the body processes purines. This is normal for the body to do this, however, the problem arises when you either eat too much of these purines or your body is unable to properly process the uric acid you produce. Therefore reducing the amount of high purine foods can help reduce your levels to a manageable number. Examples of high purine foods would be game meat and peanuts.

3. Vitamin C

Foods high in vitamin C are very helpful in reducing your overall levels. Studies show that this vitamin has the potential to reduce levels by up to 50% when consumed regularly. This fact definitely helps reduce the likelihood of future attacks and also helps to reduce their severity.

4. Eat Plenty of Fruits

Fruits are a great asset to reducing your levels of uric acid as well as providing gout pain relief. That is because most fruits contain the first three things on this list. Many fruits contain potassium, are low in purines, and contain plenty of vitamin C. Not only that, but a variety of fruits have other properties that can help reduce swelling, such as bromelain in pineapples and improve joint damage, such as niacin in avocados. So add plenty of fruits to your diet.

Simple Things You Can Do to Reduce Arthritis Related Joint Pain

Arthritis is a very uncomfortable condition that many people both young and old suffer from. It's so common that many people try to just ignore it and go on with their day. Causes of High White Blood Cell Count

There are several possible causes for a high white blood cell count. This count is high when there are more disease-fighting cells in your body. The technical term for this condition is leukocytosis.

Different medical practices may have different limits by which they define high white blood cell count. A count of 10,500 leukocytes in one microliter of blood is widely accepted as a high count. The threshold may vary between sex and age.

White blood cells are categorized by five subtypes, and each type has a different activity in fighting disease. When you get the results of your white blood cell count, they will usually specify what the levels are of all the different types. Usually, a high count is only caused by an increase in one type of white blood cells.

A high white blood cell count is indicative of an immune system problem that increases their production; a disease in your bone marrow that causes high blood cell production; a reaction to some drug that is used to enhance cell production; or the increase expected when your body is fighting off an infection.

There are some more specific reasons why your white blood cell count may be high:

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer that lives in the bone marrow and blood. This disease is a rapidly progressive one. Children are more affected by this than any other type of cancer, although adults can develop the disease as well.

Drugs like epinephrine and corticosteroids can affect your white cell count.

Measles is an infection that affects mainly the respiratory tract. It is very contagious. The signs include skin rash, fever, sore throat, inflamed eyes, runny nose and cough. The measles vaccine is an excellent way to protect children against this disease, but outside of the civilized countries, many children are not vaccinated. This disease will spread rapidly among people who have not had the vaccination.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a serious type of arthritis from which you will experience joint damage and pain. It attacks your joints' lining and this causes swelling. In turn, that leads to throbbing, aching pain and possibly eventual deformity. Rheumatoid arthritis, also called RA, can make even the easiest of normal activities hard to accomplish.

Some of the other causes of high white blood cell count include:

Stress, be it emotional or physical
Smoking
Tuberculosis
Tissue damage, like one receives with burns
Acute or chronic myelogenous leukemia
Chronic or acute lymphocytic leukemia
Whooping cough
Severe allergic reactions
Myelofibrosis
Polycythemia vera
Other viral infections
Other bacterial infections

Natural Glucosamine and Dog Arthritis: How It Helps and Where To Find It

For dog arthritis, some glucosamine is better than others. Feeding your dog naturally occurring glucosamine will help the body to repair and rebuild its own cartilage and revitalize the synovial fluid.

Dog arthritis can occur as hip dysplasia, cruciate ligament tears, or joint pain from osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. Over your dog's life, their body produces its own glucosamine, which maintains the cartilage and attracts synovial fluid around their joints.

As a normal part of the aging process, a dog's naturally produced glucosamine will deteriorate, causing the fluid that lubricates the joints to thin and preventing collagens from rebuilding the cartilage that supports the joints. The natural answer to this process is to provide your dog with a supply of naturally occurring glucosamine, rather than a manufactured one.

How Natural Glucosamine Helps

The main building blocks in a natural glucosamine are glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) paired with chondroitin. GAGs are long sugar chains that help repair cellular development in cartilage and connective tissue. Chondroitin helps calm inflammation and rejuvenates lubrication in the joints.

Researchers have found that when a natural supplement pairs both glycosaminoglycans and chondroitin with other anti-inflammatory and energizing herbs, the absorption rate increases. This gives your dog more get up and go than if he or she were given only glucosamine.

By using a natural supplement that replaces the missing GAGs and chondroitin, your dog's joints will begin to repair and maintain themselves more efficiently and more quickly.

Where to find GAGs

Naturally occurring glucosamine can be found in the cartilage and bones of other animals. Feeding your dog raw meats that contain bone marrow or connective tissue is a great way to get more naturally occurring glucosamine in their diet.

In supplements, the most commonly used animals are the backbone cartilage of a shark and bovine trachea. There are many manufacturers that are aware of the need to protect sharks and use shark cartilage only from sharks caught for food. Shark cartilage contains a less amount of GAGs, yet because it also contains vital amino acids and proteoglycans it is more effective than bovine cartilage. This is true of other marine collagen extracts. The bovine cartilage overloads the supplement with GAGs but it doesn't provide the necessary mineral content for optimum absorption.

Natural supplements that contain shark cartilage or marine collagen extract paired with anti-inflammatory herbs will give your dog the best shot of getting on their feet again and maintaining their joints.

The most important thing to remember when feeding supplements to your dog is that dog arthritis is a long-term problem that must be managed. Supplements will need to be given to your dog regularly to keep the ingredients in their bloodstream. Once a supplement is stopped, the synovial fluid will begin to thin again and the collagen will stop repairing itself. Natural glucosamine supplements are a great alternative to NSAIDs and other harsh drugs. They can be given regularly for the life of your dog without side effects.
