Snap, Crackle and Pop - Arthritis Pain and Homeopathy

Stiff elbows, creaky wrists, crackly knees... suffering from arthritis swelling and pain is not the way we planned to spend our middle and later years. And as if the pain, swelling and restriction isn't enough, the side effects from the drugs can cause entirely new symptoms and diseases. Just reading the small print of arthritis drugs is enough to give one a case of anxiety disorder.

Yet, there is an alternative of grand proportions....homeopathy. Homeopathy is the gentle medicine that has offered relief from joint pain and slowed the progression of this disheartening disease for the last one hundred years or so. If properly utilized, homeopathy can address the inflammation, pains, sleeplessness, lethargy and despair. It can even eliminate future problems and bring joints to their normal state if caught early enough.

Take Carolynn for an example. Carolyn is a knitting enthusiast. As a young girl, her mother taught her to knit everything from scarves to ponchos and ever since that time, mother and daughter have enjoyed their hobby together. When Carolyn's right thumb began swelling with pain last fall, she commenced taking analgesics a few times a week. Soon she discovered that it wasn't enough when she had a knitting project at hand, so she doubled the dose and began taking this amount daily, especially when the weather was damp. Within three months she experienced abdominal pain and blood in her stool. When she mentioned this to her doctor, the first thing he asked her was if she was taking aspirin or the like. After leaving the doctor's office with three new prescriptions, one for the abdominal bleeding, one for inflammation and another for joint pain, it was clear to Carolynn at that moment that she needed to find an alternative method for the mess she was in. On the way home, with swollen hands and a sharp pain in her abdomen, she recalled that only last week her neighbor mentioned that a homeopath had cured her husband of tendonitis. "Hmm", she considered, "I wonder if an inflammation of joints is treatable with homeopathy?"

Carolynn met with a homeopath a week later and after taking the remedy for only three days, she felt measurably improved. The blood in her stool and abdominal pain were gone in about ten days and her thumb was no longer painful within the first week. Even the swelling was reduced. More unexpected was her hip that had also been bothering her nightly in bed for years, was no longer sore and achy. She was so accustomed to it that she never even thought to mention this to the homeopath. And now it was distinctly missing. This, in turn, restored her sleep to the way it was when she was younger. The most astounding relief came from her feet. She had always suffered from pain and other sensations in her heels anytime she walked too far. Yet now this pain, too, was nearly gone.

It was difficult to imagine that the little pills she took that had no side effects, were non-addictive and cost under $20, could make such a difference in her well being. Her knitting was not only done without pain, but she found that the dexterity she had lost years ago, also returned.

The homeopath informed her that she should take Rhus tox once every two weeks. After the second appointment, no follow up appointment was scheduled because she was no longer in pain. Wow! No pain and no meds! Carolynn was so delighted, she scheduled an appointment for her mother, Maddie, who also suffers from arthritis.

Maddie, in her eighties, has had arthritis ever since she was in an automobile accident nearly twenty years ago. She has taken steroids for the last three years, however, she recently read on line that steroids can cause bone loss. There was no coincidence, she thought, that she had recently broken her hip from a minor injury. It indeed seemed too extreme a break from such a minor fall. And it was the x-ray technician who made the correlation between the drug and the onset of her osteoarthritis. Why hadn't she been warned by her doctor? She wouldn't have taken the steroids had she known the consequences. Now she was hopeful that her daughter's homeopath could offer another way.

Her visit to the homeopath was not unlike Carolynn's. She learned that homeopathy has no side effects, is gentle and could be used in tandem with her anti-inflammatory medication. The best part was that she could soon reduce the medication s as her joint pain improved. And that's just what happened. The homeopath prescribed Arnica montana for Maddie, for the residual pain in her hip from the fracture. She had to admit the pain was lessened and the shaky feeling that had become a part of her daily life since the break, was also resolved. Two months later, Maddie was given another remedy, Sanguinaria for the chronic joint inflammation and pain in her neck. It was like a miracle! It took a few weeks, but soon Maddie was free of pain altogether! She told her friends and neighbors; anyone who would listen. From time to time, Maddie returns to her homeopath for what she calls a "tune up". Each visit is an opportunity to get another health issue resolved. Soon her sleep was restored, too. What used to be a nightly struggle, became deep uninterrupted sleep followed by a desire to spring into action upon arising. Life simply got easier without the little aches, pains and disturbances.

It is said that health is freedom. Freedom to pursue what each of us is meant to do. Homeopathy provides and respects the individual differences between us and offers a safe, drug free solution to debilitating disease and puts the body in order. It politely tames the disease so that it no longer exists. For both women, there's no longer a concern that knitting will be painful or will be put aside because of joint pain. Now Carolynn and Maddie go for long walks, often to the local knitting shop to get inspired for the next project. Then they walk home - the long way. They swing their arms with comfort and ease, each with a satisfied grin as they head home to wield their needles for their new knitting venture and a life worth living.

What Is the Best Nightguard Type?

If you are grinding your teeth at night and wake up with sore painful jaw muscles and other facial pain, you may be able to stop that pain by wearing a dental nightguard while you sleep. You can choose a hard, soft or combination nightguard type depending on the severity of your problem and your need to save time and money. These night guards are available online or from dental specialists.

Who Should Use a Nightguard?

If you have any of the following signs or symptoms, you may benefit from a nightguard dental appliance.

  • Teeth clenching, grinding (bruxism)

  • Pain in the jaw joint (TMJ)

  • Ear ache or hearing problems, often a high pitched noise

  • General face pain

  • Pain in the neck

  • Clicking or popping of the jaw joint

  • Teeth that are sensitive

  • Painful jaw muscles

  • Dizziness

  • Sleeping problems

  • Trouble with opening or closing your mouth

  • Headaches

  • Teeth that are worn, sharp, short, or flat

  • Frequently breaking teeth or dental work

  • Sleep partner complains of grinding noise during sleep

  • Snoring or sleep apnea

What causes the pain?

Muscles rule. The constant muscle contraction during sleep causes muscle fatigue. Lactic acid and other chemicals accumulate within the fatigued muscles causing pain. It is sort of like the Colorado River making the Grand Canyon. It may not seem like much at first but over time the clenching can actually cause the teeth to wear away and damage the TMJ and bony structures. Sometimes the damage is permanent. Teeth can wear becoming sensitive as the clenching wears away the surface closer and closer to the nerve. The teeth sockets can be damaged resulting in the teeth becoming loose. The supporting ligaments and tendons of the TMJ are injured by this extreme muscular activity resulting in pain, bite changes, and permanent joint damage. All the associated muscles of the face and neck can become fatigued resulting in pain as the other supporting joint structures tendons and ligaments are stressed and also become painful as a result of the relentless muscle clenching.

How Can Nightguard Help?

The pain cycle is initiated by the jaw muscles clenching. In some cases the nightguard works by preventing the beginning of this cycle. Night guards have a similar shape to the common sports mouthguard; but night guards are designed with other benefits. Since the nightguard prevents full closure due to the thickness of the nightguard, maximum force cannot be created. Reduced muscle force helps eliminate the pain. Protecting the teeth with a resin or vinyl type nightguard material also eliminates further teeth or dental work damage. If the problem is caused by a bad bite, a dentist specializing in TMJ disorders may be required to realign the jaw to a more physiological position. Some of these dentists trained for treating TMJ problems are called neuro-muscular dentists.Emotional stress also may cause a person to clench. Professional counseling may get at the cause and the TMJ pain can be helped temporarily by using a nightguard during psychological counseling. Snoring and sleep apnea are also seen in combination with the clenching. Sometimes wearing a nightguard will help those situations also.

How to Choose a Nightguard

Nightguards are currently being made in one of three types: Soft Nightguard, Hard Nightguard and a Dual Laminate Nightguard which is soft on the inside and hard on the outside. Review the following information to help you choose the best nightguard type for your situation.

Soft Nightguard Benefits

If you have minor pain or just want to try a mouthpiece the soft nightguard may be a good choice. By being soft these nightguards are usually quite comfortable, priced right and may satisfactorily treat the clenching pain. By being soft however, the material is more likely to become worn easily especially if you are an extreme clencher; but the soft mouth guard still may help you. If you have extreme clenching or know that you have bite problems, some TMJ experts say that the soft nightguard may actually increase you clenching. This is an individual problem and can vary from case to case. These economical soft nightguards available online may fully stop your pain or let you see if you get relief from a nightguard, before you invest in a dentist nightguard or more durable custom laboratory nightguard available online. Since fitting is easy and the nightguards are economical, many people start with the soft night guard. If you find you are still having problems, you can make your own custom nightguard from the online lab or consult with a dental specialist for treatment.

Hard Nightguard Benefits

These nightguards are the most durable and are fabricated with hard acrylic. These may be used by people with extreme clenching or complicated bite problems. A TMJ dental specialist may be best to treat these extreme clenchers since the fitting process can be very precise. The hard acrylic does not compress under stress and as such may not be quite as comfortable. If you want to self- treat your problem, some online dental laboratories provide the option of making your own hard acrylic nightguard. You receive an impression kit form the lab, make your own impression, and then send it to the lab for fabrication. This hard lab nightguard available online may help solve your problem completely or serve as a good treatment option until you have time or money to obtain a professional solution.

Dual Laminate Nightguard Benefits

Relatively new on the scene is the dual laminate nightguard. This mouthguard combines both the comfort of the soft guard and the durability of the hard acrylic. The first soft vinyl layer of material covers the teeth and provides maximum comfort and adaptability. This cushions the teeth under extreme pressure. The outer layer is a hard durable acrylic designed to not break away under clenching and will help protect teeth. The dual laminate nightguard available onlinerequires a custom impression by the user. Yet with all these advantages the extreme clencher may not be able to tolerate the slight extra thickness require for these two layers. Extreme clenchers may need to consult a TMJ dentist. However for most nighttime clenchers, the dual laminate nightguard combination is strong yet comfortable.

Nightguard Availability

These nightguards are available from dentists and online stores. A nightguard fitted by a dentist specializing in TMJ problems will likely give you the best possible solution. However if you want to save time and money, you can consider treating your teeth grinding and clenching pain with nightguards obtained from mouthguard stores online.

Thumb Arthritis: This Joint Pain Is More Common Than You Think

This condition can cause many problems for sufferers, including loss of grip and, of course, a great deal of pain. But what are its causes and is there a remedy?

Thumb arthritis usually occurs after the age of forty and is more common in women than in men. The first symptom of thumb arthritis is usually pain experienced at the base of the thumb when gripping an object or when applying force - say to turn a key or open the lid of a jar. This form of osteoarthritis can make these simple household tasks difficult as it limits the strength and range of motion of the thumb.

Other symptoms may include swelling, stiffness and tenderness at the base of the thumb, decreased strength when grasping objects, enlarged appearance or a 'bony' look to the base of the thumb and general discomfort and aching after use.

The exact cause of this condition is unknown (in common with osteoarthritis generally) but the following factors are thought to contribute to its development:

Being female
Having a job that puts high stress on the thumb joint
Having certain hereditary conditions - joint ligament laxity, defective cartilage etc.
Having past injuries such as fractures or sprains to the basal thumb joint
Being over forty years of age
Having existing rheumatoid arthritis

The basal thumb joint allows your thumb its wide range of movement and consists of the trapezium (the small bone at the base of your thumb), the first metacarpal (the thumb's first bone) and the wrist's scaphotrapezio-trapezoidal joint (STT).

In a normal basal joint, cartilage covers the ends of the bone, acting as a cushion to let the bones glide smoothly over each other. In thumb arthritis, the cartilage deteriorates allowing the bone ends to rub and roughen - the main cause of pain.

Your body's attempts to repair the damage may lead to new bone growth (spurs), which are noticeable on the joint. Each of the repair steps also produces the pain commonly associated with this condition.

Although there is no cure for thumb arthritis, self-care measures do exist. These include specialised splints, prescribed medication or corticosteroid injections. In extreme cases surgery may be the only way to gain a measure of relief.

It would seem then that there is no real remedy for thumb arthritis, any more than other general arthritic conditions, but that early diagnosis and treatment may serve to alleviate the worst symptoms of what can otherwise be a very debilitating condition. Changing lifestyle or work practices may help - any reduction of strain on the affected joint should bring some measure of relief. Too, adapting to the condition by using aids to mobility or dexterity can help, alleviating some of the frustration that is often felt by sufferers of arthritis and allowing the person affected to retain as much independence as possible. Exercise (as opposed to stressing) of the joint can also help to retain its range of motion.

As with all medical issues, it is essential that you consult your doctor if you suspect the onset of any form of arthritis.

Bursitis - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, which is a small, fluid-filled sac which lubricates and cushions pressure points between the bones, tendons and muscles near the joints. Bursae help the joints to move with ease. Common symptoms of bursitis include a dull ache or stiffness near the elbow, hip, knee, shoulder, big toe or other joints; a worsening of pain with movement or pressure; swelling, warmth and redness in the area. Common causes of bursitis include overuse, stress and direct trauma to a joint. Bursitis may also result from an infection, arthritis or gout.

The Ayurvedic treatment of bursitis is aimed at controlling the pain and reducing the swelling and inflammation in the bursae. Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras and Vish-Tinduk-Vati are used to control pain, swelling and inflammation. Local application on the affected parts can be done using medicines like Vishgarbha oil, Mahanarayan oil and Mahasaindhav oil. Local steam fomentation of the affected parts using decoctions like Dashmool-Qadha and Nirgundi-Qadha is also a very effective procedure for reducing pain and swelling.

For patients who do not respond to the above medicines, additional treatment is required to control the pain and swelling. In such situations, medicines like Trayodashang-Guggulu, Tapyadi-Loh and Ekang-Veer-Ras are used for prolonged periods. If the bursitis is due to an infection, medicines like Sukshma-Triphala, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu and Gandhak-Rasayan are used in order to treat the infection. In some refractory patients, the local application of leeches brings about a dramatic relief from pain and swelling.

With adequate treatment and rest, bursitis usually disappears within a couple of weeks. In order to prevent bursitis or its recurrence, it is advisable to engage in regular physical activity and exercise in moderation to strengthen the muscles. It is important to maintain a good posture, to avoid prolonged and repetitive tasks, and to avoid sitting still in one position for a long time.

How Vitamins Deficiencies And Joint Pain Are Related

If you suffer from an illness that causes joint pain, such as osteoarthritis, it is possible that vitamin deficiencies might be contributing to the problem. Although using vitamin supplements including vitamin D, the antioxidant vitamins A,C and E, and essential fatty acids will not cure your joint pain, they can significantly relieve your symptoms and prevent the illness progressing.

Arthritis takes many different forms and is the most common chronic illness in America. It is occurs when the cartilage that naturally protects and cushions the joints is worn away causing inflammation and a great deal of pain. Vitamin D deficiency does not cause arthritis but can increase its severity and consequently the symptoms.

Some vitamin D occurs naturally in the body and is produced by the skin when it is exposed to sunlight for a limited period of time. People who live in climates where they are exposed to very little sunlight are particularly encouraged to take Vitamin D supplements for this reason. Although vitamin D is found naturally is some foods such as eggs and fatty fish, most people need to eat foods fortified with vitamin D to get their recommended daily allowance.

Vitamin D deficiency means that the body is not able to naturally rebuild cartilage in your joints when it is worn away. This leads to a more rapid development of arthritis. A deficiency of vitamin D can also lead to bone diseases such as osteoporosis and rickets, so it is recommended that young babies are given vitamin D supplements if they are breast fed as breast milk will not provide them with sufficient vitamin D.

Deficiencies of antioxidant vitamins accelerate the development of joint pain in a very different way. Vitamins A, C and E are able to neutralise free radicals in the body that can attack joint tissue and contribute to the symptoms of arthritis. Free radicals also cause other serious diseases such as cancer, so making sure you get enough antioxidant vitamins either in your diet or in supplements is essential.

Vitamin A is found naturally in retinol from dairy products, as well as egg yolks, oily fish and beta-carotene in orange and yellow vegetables. To ingest vitamin C naturally you need to eat citrus fruits, broccoli, peppers or tomatoes. Vitamin E can be gained by eating vegetable oils, wheat germ, nuts, seeds, spinach, and avocado. These vitamins are widely available in vitamin supplements if you think you may not get enough in your diet.

Another vitamin substance that you may be deficient in if you have joint pain is essential fatty acid. Taking this as a supplement will not prevent the onset of arthritis, but it will reduce inflammation and therefore reduce pain.

If you are suffering from joint pain, ask you doctor or pharmacist to recommend a vitamin supplement that incorporates all of these substances. Reversing your vitamin deficiencies may not cure the source of your joint pain, but it will certainly allow you to lead a more comfortable and active life.

Alternative Medicine Techniques For The Modern World

The Western world is generally perceived to be the bringer of modernity, and oftentimes, their particular standard when it comes to certain areas of life, such as medicine for example, is deemed to be the ultimate and absolute measurement for modern living.

In the field of medicine, for example, it has been traditionally perceived that mainstream medical treatments are the only acceptable means for treating patients with several diseases. Lately however, with the growing acceptance of alternative medicine techniques that employ unconventional treatment methods, but are nonetheless proven to have healing capabilities, the Western standard is slowly opening up to these newer treatment techniques.

Alternative medicine techniques refer to certain treatment approaches that deal with an illness from another medicinal approach. For example, these techniques might originate from indigenous and traditional practices and utilize unconventional treatment tools, and have only been recently discovered by modern scientists. Moreover, in the United States, several collected pieces of evidence have proven that these medicine types are effective for several conditions such as neck and back pain, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and many more.

Here are some popular examples of these techniques:

The first one is Acupuncture. This alternative technique has long been practiced in China. As a matter of fact, it's already been in use for 2,500 years for treating several diseases and conditions, such as back pain, bone or joint injury, allergies, gout, and even severe headache. This technique is executed by inserting one or more needles in specific areas of the body and in different depths, and are left there for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Many people have since testified that acupuncture is effective and has treated them either incrementally or fully - and the explanation for this is that the needles are inserted in specific areas that coincide with the body's line of energy.

Another alternative technique is the Craniosacral therapy. This was introduced in the 1970s by John Upledger, and is done by exerting mild pressure in certain key areas of the cranial bones, specifically near the skull's sutures. Moreover, this can also be done on the whole body, but the exerted pressure should specifically be mild. With these strategic applications of pressure, CST generally corrects the body's dysfunctions and imbalances that may be contributing factors to painful conditions. Some of the diseases that CST specifically targets include back and neck pain, TMJ dysfunction, orthopedic problems, central nervous system disorders, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

Medical massage therapy is, of course, another popular alternative treatment option, and is widely perceived to be one of the more well known alternative medicine techniques. Medical massages are widely offered in hospitals because of their inherent capability to relieve certain painful ailments and medical conditions.

Moreover, since 2004, these add-on services have been offered 30% more to hospital patients because of their established alleviation for not just pain management, but even for anxiety and depression. The major conditions that medical massage therapy targets are stress relief, relief for patients with cancer, and of course pain management. The more popular massages include the Thai massage, Swedish massage, hot stone massage, deep tissue massage, and Marma therapy massage.
